Although most snowboard boots are soft some variations do exist. The sort of boot used will be determined by the sort of binding mounted on the snowboard. Step-in bindings require special boots that are specifically designed for that binding. Even though step-in bindings and boots ultimately failed it still is possible to find both boots and bindings at some board shops.
The second, and most popular, type of snowboard boots are the strap in variety. These boots are good because they needn’t be paired with a specific binding and can be chosen for comfort style and warmth. Though not hard like most ski boots, these boots still offer a great deal of support and may even feature custom orthotics for even more comfort.
The last type of snowboard boots are actually hard, they are called alpine boots and are used by professional riders to perform feats that most normal borders will never experience. They are used almost exclusively in the backcountry in dangerous terrain. Whatever type of boot suits your needs make sure that it is indeed compatible with your board.
